I'm currently building a West Greenland skin on frame kayak from the Sea Kayaker plans. I'm just about ready to skin mine and have had a great time building it. Last winter I built a Guillemot. Worked on it almost everyday to get the boat done in 6 months (granted, my only previous woodworking experinece was building soapbox derby cars in Cub Scouts). The skin on frame is fun to build b/c you get instant gratification. I've put very little time into its construction and am already 3/4 finished. I'll probably spend about $150 - $200 to build the entire boat. For the most part, I use whatever wood I can find--spruce for the gunwales, pine for the stems, and yellow cedar for the ribs. As far as techincal advice for construction, I highly recommend you join the baidarka mailing list. Everyone on the list is full of ideas, and you'll a lot about the historical origins and uses of these craft. Have fun and good luck!
