1/What would happen if you took Nicks pull idea and put on epoxy? - Clamp 8in from end, wrap next inch w/ masking tape, pull tight, clamp very end, drip epoxy around thin part beside masking tape, after dry release clamps and cut 1" along the epoxy. If it holds together - yer laffin '.

2/Quick and dirty is to stretch the end betw some clamps or whatever, drip CA around the fabric, and cut off. The CA/fabric makes another compressed composite end cap.

If they work, you get a compressed end covered w/ a composite cap, and no blob. Or maybe you could combine both - instead of cutting, use the hot knife approach - then maybe the cut end will retract inside the outer a tad and you get the benefits of 2 approaches w/ no blob?
