Setting Up Forms

By Nick - Posted on 29 December 2009

Here I show using an aluminum strongback and spacers to quickly and accurately set up forms. This same technique would work with a plywood box beam. The aluminum is more rigid, but the plywood will work as well.

My newer book "Building Strip Planked Boats" includes a description of the spacer method of setting up forms on an internal strongback.

Nick, where can you find the Aluminum tubing? I looked on the internet and I have not found a supplier. If there is a chain for supply stores were I could pick this up and save a lot on shipping that would be great. I am really ready to start by kayak but I have scrapped 2 strong back already because of twisting. I can't find a 2x4 that’s even close and I failed at building a good box beam out of ply. I will make a second attempt at the ply box beam but the aluminum one shown in your videos would be great. Any help is greatly appreciated

I got my extrusion from Yarde Metals. They have several distributors around the country.

Hi,

When building a box beam for a strong back, according to the instructions in your book, do you glue the four pieces together or screw them?

Thanks,
Tomer

I generally glue, but a few nails to hold it together while the glue dries is a good idea.
