The Freedom Solo is the result of a unique project initiated in the spring of 2006. As an experiment, Steve Killings decided to poll the opinions of paddlers and builders as he designed the boat. Predictably, opinions varied, but did so about a common theme. The boat, they felt should be short, light, medium tracking and therefore medium manoeuvrability, low freeboard, and narrow. The unique tumblehome chine was accepted (by most) as a good solution, attractive, and relatively easy to build. The result is a fine solo tripping canoe which will require at least intermediate paddling skills due to its lower-than-average stability.

Included in the Plans:

  • Five 24" x 36" [61cm x 91cm] Drawing Pages including: An overall drawing, a full size form or mold station drawings showing all the sectional forms and the end/stem forms. One half of each mold station is provided. You will trace one side on your form material and then flip over the pattern and trace the other side.
  • Build a Bear Mountain style Canoe: This 32 page illustrated booklet from written by Ted Moores, for WoodenBoat Magazine describes the process of building a cedar strip canoe.

Recommended Manual:

  • CanoeCraft - Ted Moore's bible on wood strip canoes goes into the building process in great detail.
  • Building Strip Planked Boats - Nick Schade's book on making strip built boats covers techniques for building unusual shapes such as the distinctive tumblehome of some modern canoes.

Designed by Steve Killing for Bear Mountain Boats.
