thinking about building a canoe or kayak - strip style. also thinking about the method for building a gull (constant camber) skiff. strips look a hell of a lot simpler than the vacuum bagged cold molding the plans call for...

I just completed a Goerge Dyson Design Baidarka. I modified it to have three hatches and use a feathercraft rudder system. I was suprised to see the pictures on your web site about building a Baidarka. I thought someone had taken pictures of my garage. I sailed it last week for the first time in a heavy wind. What a blast!! This design is lite and suprisingly fast. If you would like pictures for you web site. email me at alanlue @ aol.com.

Nick:
I purchased your book The Strip-Built Sea Kayak and have enjoyed reading it. For asethetic reasons only, I tend to favor the Great Auk. I have built several stripper canoes and sold them, so I feel comfortable about building your designs. However, I am more interested in the Auk's paddling characteristics relative to a new person getting into kayaking. Both wife and I are novices in kayaking. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Kevin
P.S. The Great Auk was another environmental glitch in man's quest for riches.

Nick: I've seen your designs, bought the book...Have the tools; just need the space. What do you think of Oak as a medium? Most tell me, too heavy. Is this true? You use Cedar, Spruce, Pine,Redwood. What other woods are suitable? Question. I'm thinking of taking an extended trip around Australia.Color me foolish, but it sounds plausible. My reasoning for Oak as the planks(Strips) is for durability. what are your thoughts? I'm a fairly big fella; 6'2";210#. The expedition allows 248# as it's capacity. Is there any way to increase it's load capability? My toll free number here in Hawaii is 1/888/943/5065. If you need to talk. E-mail is Fine also. Thanks for the many nights of restless sleep... This is without question the best kayak builder's internet resource available.
The BBS is informative, entertaining, and filled with lively debates on the vrtues of various techniques and building philosophies.
Nick Schade's Book is well worth the price.
Nick (the sysop) is friendly, and he allows people who use the BBS the freedom to disagree with his opinions and to drift off subject a little from time to time.
Keep up the good work Nick! Kudos.

I have enjoyed the information available on this site and on the bbs info exchange site. I am new to this area (kayaks), having sold my power boats when I moved to Jacksonville two years ago from Pensacola Florida. Scuba diving and fishing every week of the year came to a close in 1994 when due to BRAC (Base Realignment And Closure) 1993 my dive buddies of 15+ years scattered to different areas. Resurrection of a diving/fishing environment in Jacksonville, just didn't have the same feelings associated with it anymore. Fortunately, I have came into contact with kayaks recently and the comfort and peace that I associate with being on the water has returned. I was getting ready to buy a plastic kayak, when I inadvertently discovered the possibilities of manufacturing S&G plywood/fiberglass. Further investigation on the internet has revealed a whole new light on the subject. I decided to build a CLC Chesapeake 17. It may not be the best kayak out there. (But as President Clinton would say, you need to define "best"). I am very intrigued by the strippers. Actually I am intrigued by all the kayak manufacturing/building.

Nick, I just received a copy of your book this morning and I had to write to tell you how excited I am about it! You obviously put a lot of effort and experience into it and I need to say thank you! I am getting ready to build Jay Babina's Outer Island and your book is sure to be the best tool I could have. Obviously I have not read the whole thing yet but the content and the photos and sections I've viewed so far are the best "how To" I've seen on any subject. Thanks again.

After a trip to the upper peninsula of Michigan, I became interested in kayaks. I love wooden boats and have been thinking of building a rowing boat. Now a kayak looks like the way to go. My sister sent me your URL. Her husband built one of your designs and is pleased with the result. I might give it a try.

A wish of mine is to start building a strip built sea kayak out of red wood. From what I have read the timber seems to be OK. I am looking for plans for a 19ft expedition boat with atleast two water tight compartments. A rudder is a necessary item as I paddle in large following sea a great part of the time. Cheers.

Nick,
I purchased your fine book (you signed it for me) at the St.
Michaels Wooden Boat Show. I've read other how-to's for strip
building since then and still think that yours is the best
by far.
I haven't decided yet which kayak I want to build, but Austin's
endless summer will be over soon and it will be time to start
working on one.
My CLC 16 is still serving me well but your boats or so
beautiful I just have to build one.

I am building the Great Auk based on the tables
set out in your book. I've built out the "stiff back" and
have been fortunate enough to have access to a cad system
coupled to a laser for cutting all the forms and burning in
the reference lines. Right now I'm concerned/obsessing about
lining up the forms and am considering cutting identical "mini-forms/
mounting brackets upon which I can mark my line-pulled centerline and
and align to a line-pulled vertical reference line. I would
then mount the forms to these mini-forms/mounting brackets.
Am I obsessing or does this sound feasible?

This is the first usefull web-page I have found yet and I happened to be looking for it! I have built a couple cedar strip canoes before but I had a problem on the second where the resin did not harden next to the wood. I stripped the goo off and sold it unfinished...That was 15 years ago. I have an order in the mail for your book and I feel confident that with your book and website, I'll be sucessfull with a kayak. Now to finish my wifes punch-list of things to do so I can start! By the way, I'm not sure if the address above will work, I have access through my employers mainframe and I have only e-mailed outside the company once-- I'm not sure of the address. Thanks for getting me excited about a great project! I'll order plans after reading the book. Jerry

You have a wonderfully informative Website. Having built a stitch 'n glue triple from a West Coast kit manufacturer, I would now like to build a fast single for use as a trainer and recreational racer. I have been eyeing your Great Auk, but wonder if a modified hull design with more of a V-bottom and slightly less beam would be faster. I know rescue techniques and would be comfortable with a little sacrifice in stability. I'd also like to have the prettiest race boat on the water. Can you give me some of your thoughts? Thanks in advance. Scott D

Very nice designs I bougth your book, The Strip Built Sea Kayak, from The Wooden Boat Store, and Iook forward to build one for myself.
I have tried (and done) to draw the plans of the Gullemot, from the offsets tables, but think there is some missing data beacause what I get in the computer is sligty diferent from what you show in figure 4-2 of The Strip-Built Sea Kayak book, where the form ends not at WL8" and WL-3" as it does in the table.
Do you have any tip to solve that?
Thanks and happy paddling.

About a year and a half ago I decided to build a kayak. Wich lead to the inevitable question, how do you build a kayak?
I checked the library under boat building wich lead to deciding to build a sailboat. While building the sailboat I decide to build an airplane (please don't ask how I came up with that one)
So now a year and a half later, the sailboat is done, the airplane is started and it is finally time to ask the question so how do you build a kayak?
Luckily I bought The Strip Built Kayak from Woodenboat magazine and am going to start the Guillemot soon.
Thanks a lot. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Excellent site. One of the guests put it best. You have captured enough detail to keep it very interesting and motivational. A page that allows guests/customers to add tips might be interesting.
To everyone reading this, I AM convinced that there is nothing more enjoyable and rewarding than using a kayak that you build yourself.
I have built (and shown others - even groups of kids - how to build) many singles and paddles and they have all been astonished at how simple it is.
I am ordering your book and as soon as I finish my house I will be starting on your double.

Nick: Thank You!! for one of the most complete & refreshingly `personal' corporate websites in the Boating and Marine arenas. Browsing the numerous topics you've supplied this site with gives the impression not of a glossy catalogue reproduction "Web-ized", but of an old-time craftsman extending the invitation to come into the shop for a friendly "look-see and a chin wag". The pictures are wonderful. The ad in Wooden Boat magazine certainly doesn't do justice to the beauty of your work. The line and colour of your craftsmanship makes for as beautiful and, well, sensuous a woodworking as I've seen. And this impression, mind you, is from your Website alone. Congratulations.

This is great. My husband is building his own kayak in our basement and is always looking for information. He build a Mirror Dinghy twenty years ago from a kit. But this venture is from plans in a book. I'm helping occasionally but with a four-year old it doesn't leave me enough time to spend with him. He is pondering how to cover it. Canvas, fiberglas, etc. Follow the plans or make it safer. We need more input to make a competent decision. Your site should help us. I will be back tomorrow to check the sites he is interested in. Thanks and great kayaking!

have just started to read your pages ;looks very interesting, i am about to start building our second kayak with my friend russell. we have currently 2 glen l sea kayaks built from wood, of course, and we are about to start building 2 patuxent , when we get the plans from your side of the world!
we took our current kayaks out on the murray during our summer for 4 days and had the best time, kayaking is like "bush walking on water", it was really fabulous. we are both middle aged, no clues, but the best of times, at easter even our wifes got out in the kayaks, we may have to built even more later on.
i look forward to reading your page.

Well it does look like a "content rich" site. A friend and I have built 3 wood strip canoes and were building a wood strip kayak but then popo happened. the deck does not fit the bottem. Then we managed to split the bottem. This was designated as the friends kayak and he has given the o k to make firewood out of it. We are looking for a wood strip kayak that wont go POPO.
I think that I will download most ofthe site to disk and browse for the rest of the evening.

I haven't looked at anything yet,but am going to right after I write this. I've been kayaking over ten years here on the Great Lakes. I've built alot of canoes and rowing craft (20), but not a kayak YET. My own boat is a British design...a seilkie...with a skeg. I've paddled boats with rudders, but don't care for them. A friend of mine, Jeff Bloeser is building a Dias rangeley, bought the plans from Newfound. Rt now I'm building a 10' rowboat...traditional planked with doug-fir...probably a little heavy, but I have some planking stock left over from a minesweeper project Jeff and I worked on at the local shipyard and I thought to use some of it up. Time to go. Gerry Banks

Glad I found your site. I am looking for a kayak project that will give our scout troop experience in boat building and fun on the water. I am also looking for a "sea kayak" I can build with my son.

Thanks for all of the valuable info. I'll soon be building a camp-aboard catamaran for family trips on the Canadian West coast. I am coming to the conclusion that strip building is likely the best bet for creating the hulls. Any thoughts? You've gathered some great journals here; thanks again.

Great looking boats - after I've built a couple of stitch and glues, I'll have to seriously consider a strip built - I'm all in favor of functional woks of art. If you have a print catalog, please send to : R. Paddison, 2909 Queen Victoria, Pearland, TX 77581

I like the flying Guillemots on your Home Page, I thought I had hit a Newfoundland Web site. I am browsing trying to find some plans for the Cheasapeake 17' as I have Chric Kuliziki's book "The Kayak Shop" and was planning on building the Cape Charles, but was told that the Cheasapeake was better.
